A partnership agreement has been signed between the government of Cameroon and the Portuguese bus construction company, Irmaos Mota Trans Africa for the provision of urban buses to Cameroon. The agreement was signed Tuesday, August 30, in Yaoundé.
Following the public-private partnership agreement, the Portuguese company will provide Cameroon with 150 ultramodern air-conditioned buses to be used for urban transportation in the cities of Limbe and Yaoundé only. While endorsing the agreement, Transport Minister, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o went further to disclose that the total cost of the project stands at 17 billion FRS and will run for 10 years. The government of Cameroon, as per the agreement will own 10% of the shares and will subsidies transportation fares for Cameroonians amounting to some 1.7 billion FRS CFA, the Minister revealed.

Other aspects of the contract include the construction of 26 bus terminals in Yaoundé, 579 bus computerized bus stops, video surveillance and radio communication. Each bus will have 39 seats while 52 other persons would be able to stand during the journey.
Mebe Ngo’o stressed that Paul Biya wants to go beyond the Nations Cup, which is why the buses will not stop running after 2019. It was a happy Government Delegate to the Limbe City Council, Andrew Motanga who spoke over the national radio, and as usual thanked Paul Biya and promised to judiciously use the buses.
These buses will serve as a booster to the transport subsector of the African Women’s and Men’s Nations cup to be hosted by Cameroon in 2016 and 2019 respectively, as 140 of them will be used for urban transportation while 10 VIP will be reserved for the transportation of football officials between Yaoundé and Limbe during the events.
This is not the first time urban transport companies are being installed in Cameroon. However, they never last for long. By the mid-1990s the National Transport Company popularly known as SOTUC created in 1973 was privatized.
