8 Lawyers Dismissed from Profession for “Fraud”

On July 3, 2018, the last session of the Council of the Bar Association issued a press release, in which the Disciplinary Board examined 34 cases that concerned cases of fraud. The proceeding struck off eight trainee lawyers.

According to a French language publication called Actucameroun, among those struck off are Bengono Armand Didier, Bobga Keneth, Tche Napoleon Che, Famnewk and Mr. Foyet, who have all been purged out of the legal profession on the accusations of possession of fake diplomas.

The continuation of debates concerning nine other files has been postponed to August 25th.

According to media sources, in the wake of it, the lawyers who had filed degrees not corresponding to the license in law, will hang their robes, decided the Council, which retained the incompatibility to continue their traineeship.

It should also be noted that four cases under consideration were those of the leaders of the movement challenging the results of the examination of the end of the internship of lawyers published by an order signed on April 2, 2018 by the Minister of Justice, Laurent Esso.

As a matter of fact, the unfortunate candidates had collectively constituted themselves into a group of aggrieved candidates because they considered that the results of the end-of-probation examinations of lawyers published by the Ministry of Justice were complied on the basis of favoritism.

At the same time, legal proceedings are being launched in the courts for the annulment of the contested results, in addition to having organized a sit-in before the Ministry of Justice, disrupting the activities of the Bar. And in the face of these multiple gaps, the leaders of the Bar Association had announced strong sanctions against these trainee lawyers, accused of being recalcitrant.

In addition, it should be noted that the mandates of the representatives of all the organs had expired since January 31, 2017. For this, the general assembly reiterated its position by affirming the inconvenience of the convening of these assizes with regard to the situation socio-political and security issues in Cameroon.

Yaounde: Workers of Defunct State Corporations on Serious Strike

Reports from Yaoundé, Cameroon’s political capital say that a collection of aggrieved ex-workers of some defunct state corporations are currently striking therein.

According to our source, they now sit in front of the Ministry of Finance (MINFI) not far from the National Museum in Yaounde. From Monday to Friday, they are seen seated there, some with placards that carry messages of disgruntlement.

But, Le Jour newspaper of July 4, 2018, reported that fatigue is already beginning to overcome some of them.

We learnt that it has been two months since they demonstrated at this particular place in the nation’s capital in demand for the payment of the remainder of nine months of their social rights after the liquidation and the restructuring of state-owned companies in which they were employed.

“30 years is too much, free us. Where is the living together”, some of the placards read.

To ensure that their grievances are properly driven or conveyed to the appropriate quarters, the disgruntled former state workers have grouped themselves in a group of former employees of the liquidated or privatized state companies.

Douala: Families Rendered Homeless as Land Dispute Causes Demolition of about 61 Houses

Reports say that there is pain and acrimony within the populations of a locality in Douala called "Carrefour Mützig" in Bonabèri.

TCR learnt that the pain stems from the destruction of about 61 houses therein as the tussle over the piece of land where the broken houses were built, continues between the affected populations and an economic operator.

Reports said the people of the locality were recently taken aback that the demolition exercise still took place even while the case pitting some inhabitants (mostly victims of demolition) and the economic operator is still in court (Bonanjo court of first instance).

TCR gathered that after the first phase of demolitions on May 31, 2018, local populations constituted themselves in a group and stormed the competent court.

Since then, there have been three hearings. That of June 12, 2018, that of June 19, 2018 and that of June 27, 2018. These hearings were held in the absence of the economic operator who claims to be the owner of the disputed piece of land.

According to a certain Paul Chibons, a member of the protest group, at the second hearing, the judges decided to visit the disputed land. He added that the goal of this visit was to see for themselves, the damage caused by the demolition and that after that, a verdict was going to be passed.

However, at press time, locals whose homes had not been touched feared that, they could eventually be demolished as well.

De même, depuis que le Président de la République a lancé le plan d'aide humanitaire d'urgence aux victimes de la crise dans les régions du Nord-Ouest et du Sud-Ouest, c'est la ville côtière qui a marqué les contributions.

A la fin de l'opération de collecte, le total des contributions s'élevait à 229 437 500 FCFA, distribués en espèces, en chèques et en promesses.

Pour être plus précis, 112 197 500 FCFA ont été collectés en espèces; 52.25.000 FCFA de chèques et 53.850.000 FCFA de promesses de dons.

A ces chiffres s'ajoutent 11 365 000 FCFA comptabilisés spontanément lors d'une réunion de sensibilisation tenue le 23 juin.

Bui SDO Issues Ultimatum to Bike Riders

The Senior Divisional Officer for Bui division in the Northwest region, Simon Emile Mooh, has released a statement in which he calls on motorbike owners to regularize their situation within two weeks.

According to this statement dated June 26, the administrative measure was in line with requirements made by the Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji.

According to the Bui prefect, after this deadline, a repressive phase shall be initiated throughout the division.

Recall that just days after his appointment as the Minister of Territorial administration, Paul Atanga Nji suspended the circulation of motorbikes in some parts of the troubled Northwest and Southwest regions.

Anglophone Crisis: CDC Cries Out as Crisis Poses Threat to 5,000 Jobs

The Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) is in turmoil. No less than five thousand workers in this company could lose their jobs, if the crisis that shakes the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon persists, said the management of the company.

It was during a meeting held with staff representatives and trade unionists, where the state of the company was presented and proposals were made to warn of the negative effects of the current crisis.

“The year 2017 has not been good for society. 2018 began with bright spots in the Banana segment and an improvement in the palm oil segment,” said CDC General Manager Franklin Njie.

CAMEROON: Minister Tchiroma Makes another Startling Revelation about Suspended MIDA

The Minister of Communication Issa Tchiroma Bakary, has returned to the amount of money that was collected from inhabitants of Yaoundé by MIDA.

According to him, leaders of the Integration and Development Mission for Africa (MIDA) did not collect 12 but 18 billion CFA francs from their Cameroonian subscribers.

He made the revelation Monday, June 11, 2018 in Yaoundé several weeks after government announced that the group had collected the sum of 12 billion FCFA from its subscribers.

The Minister of Communication granted a press conference to take stock of this affair, which sparked public outrage last April. The government spokesman noted that he was far off when he announced that this NGO, whose activities were suspended about two months ago, had collected 12,798,825,000 CFA francs from 11,835 subscribers.

Issa Tchiroma said Monday: “In total, under the 7th and 8th waves of subscription, there was a sum of 18,807,452,000 CFA francs collected and corresponding to 17,301 subscribers for 1,504,594 shares subscribed. 3. 850. 442. 275 CFA francs were seized, which fixes the deficit in relation to the sum collected at 14,956,982,000 CFA francs”.

In court on May 17, the lawyers of the MIDA officials, arrested in connection with this case, clearly disputed the discrepancies between the sums collected and those found, insinuating that money had been stolen from the office of MIDA by the police dispatched to the scene immediately after the order by the Senior Divisional Officer for Mfoundi, suspending the activities of MIDA.

The registration exercise initiated by the administrative authorities was completed last week. Repayment of invested funds is expected to follow suit even though no official date has been announced for the repayment process.

This has reportedly kept subscribers in an anxious state while waiting.

The Minister of Communication also revealed that five officials of MIDA are still being sought after.

Cameroon: Bui SDO Orders All State Owned Cars be parked at Security Posts after Repeated Fire Mishaps

The Senior Divisional Officer for Bui division in the Northwest region has ordered that all state cars be parked at security posts in the division.

The order signed by the administrative authority, Nzeki Theophile, to this effect is dated June 5, 2018, TCR has learnt.

Going by this order, authorities with administrative vehicles must park them in police stations or gendarmerie brigades at the end of the day.

Sources said that the measure of Theophile Nzeki, is motivated by the arson attacks on state owned cars in his area of jurisdiction in the past few weeks.

TCR learnt that many administrative vehicles recently caught fire in the division including that of the divisional delegation of the Ministry of Environment. The incident occurred while the car was parked at the delegate's home. Two days later, a police pickup truck burned at a commissioner's residence.

A local source told our correspondent that most administrative cars in Bui have been cleared of anything that identifies them to avoid attacks.

We learnt that even though there is no clear-cut evidence that these fire mishaps are the works of criminals, the prefect has however chosen to limit damage by asking users of administrative vehicles to park them in a safe place.

Cameroon: Hundreds Flee to Churches as Fighting Intensifies between Troops, Separatists in Meme Division

The number of internally displaced persons surged Monday after serious exchanges of gunshots between Soldiers and Ambazonia fighters in localities of Teke and Mambanda, all in Meme Division.

The fresh tensions that erupted early Monday forced men, women, children to trek from Teke, Mambanda to Fiango where they headed to the Catholic Church which has been hosting dozens of civilians fleeing violence.

According to CIN, another group of internally displaced persons are being hosted by Ocean City radio; a Kumba based private radio station.

There were also gunshots in Ekona, Muyuka Subdivision early Monday as locals were caught up in the fight between Soldiers and Ambazonia fighters.

Violence that has erupted from clashes between troops and Ambazonia fighters in the recent past months caused the displacement of thousands of persons.

Some villages have been burnt, livestock, farms and other properties destroyed. Soldiers and Ambazonia fighters alike have both died in cross fire but the populace of villages has been worst hit in the process.

Meme Division has suffered severely in the ongoing crisis especially areas like Konye where villages have been razed and many killed. While some people have had the opportunity to run to areas where they could be hosted by goodwill individuals, others have fled into bushes where they have been taking refuge for months now.

Humanitarian issues have been tabled as those in bushes lack food, shelter and other basic needs to survive the wild climate in the forests.

Cameroon: Muyuka Legal Department Gutted by Flames

Reports from the troubled Muyuka in the Southwest region say that the Muyuka legal department was last Thursday set ablaze by unidentified persons.

According to sources, the office of the State Council at Balong quarter was also set on fire.

According to a guard on duty, the “hoodlums” that raided and burnt down the legal department came well armed and looked ready for any eventuality.

He maintained that they all surrendered to the armed men by lying flat on their stomachs to the ground.

Some prisoners were set free same night at the Muyuka Prison by the men, we learnt.

Cameroon: Military Truck Badly Crushes Taxi in Buea

There was topsy-turvy on streets in Buea over the weekend after a police commissioner was abducted by unknown men and taken to an unidentified location.

The abduction of the police commissioner led to a crackdown by security operatives and several persons were arrested in the process and ferried to police stations in Buea.

A source said that in the event, a military truck crushed a taxi but that none of the passengers was killed as they all came out of the taxi alive.

Douala-Cameroon: Panic Strikes Bonamoussadi after Leakage of Toxic Gas

There was untold panic at the Bao Bonamoussadi in the Douala 5 district. According to reports, a toxic gas was leaked from a warehouse of the said area on June 7, 2018. This reportedly created a mess in the neighbourhood.

“I came to do my job as per the schedule. At one point, I noticed something unusual. The toxic products that were inside the barrels beforehand began to spring from the tanker,” said a dumper interviewed on site by a reporter of Radio Balafon.

He went further to declare that liquid has become pasty on the truck and everything suddenly became dark and associated with polluted air. Many people, it was reported, fainted after inhaling this toxic gas. Informed police and elements of the fire fighters’ brigade stormed the site and struggled to circumscribe the mishap.

Several persons that were affected by the leaked gas were rushed to nearby health facilities meanwhile critical cases were rushed to the Laquintinie hospital in Douala.

TCR has learnt that many people who even though felt and looked unperturbed by the disaster, are still under close monitoring.

Sources have said that a complaint has been lodged against the factory concerned which we learnt produces beverages.

Cameroun: Le gouvernement lance un recrutement de 500 jeunes pour des activités agricoles

4 Vehicles Buried in Debris of Collapsed Fence in Douala

A collapsed fence has buried four vehicles after it collapsed in Douala, Cameroon’s economic metropolis.

According to reports, the accident occurred on Tuesday May 29, 2018.

The fence of a building under construction collapsed at the Akwa district in Douala. This incident did not kill anyone. In contrast, four vehicles were buried under the debris of the wall and suffered extensive damage.

Cameroon-Douala: Journalist Attempts Suicide at Job Site for Non-Payment of Salaries

A worker of a media organ in Douala known as CMR7, Cameroon, has threatened to commit suicide at the premises of the said media house.

According to reports, the man whom reports say is fondly referred to as Madiba, at the height of desperation, poisoned himself and later fell into a trance.

“During a chat with his superior, he took out something from his pocket and swallowed. The next few minutes, he began to vomit for a long time. He was ferried to a military hospital in Douala. When he regained consciousness, he confessed that he wanted to commit suicide because of the hard times he went through.

Minister Atanga Nji Warns Bike Riders in Douala

Bike riders in Douala, Cameroon’s economic metropolis have been urged to organize themselves and get registered within three months else face heavy sanctions.

This challenge was given them by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, while on a working visit to Douala on Tuesday April 10, 2018.

During his visit, the minister held meetings with local, traditional and administrative authorities of the city during which meetings they discussed ways and means of maintaining peace in the region.

Minister Atang Nji’s visit came several days after a postponement.

The littoral region thus becomes the fourth region the minister was visiting since his appointment into the current portfolio he occupies. Atanga Nji Paul, had earlier been to the crisis hit Northwest and Southwest regions of the country where he told the people therein that he was bearer of a message of peace.

Suspense Grips Douala Inhabitants as Cinema House is Destroyed

A cinema house in Douala, Littoral region of Cameroon called "Le Wouri" has been completely destroyed.

According to sources, the cinema hall had become a shadow of itself before its closure in January 19, 2009, a week after that of the Abbia.

TCR gathered that the destruction exercise of the cinema house caught the attention of many Douala denizens to the site where it was situated, in the Akwa neighbourhood of Douala.

Our source also added that traffic was seriously hampered in this area during destruction of the cinema hall on Friday March 30, 2018. Some people even thought an accident had occurred there before understanding later, what was happening.

According to a callbox operator not far from the demolished cinema hall, it was a bulldozer that carried out the demolition works on the cinema hall. TCR learnt that the demolition exercise had even started from inside weeks before it was extended to the outside and that the ongoing destruction exercise could span for a period of six months.

 However, nothing official has filtered out as concerns the reason for the demolition of the cinema house.

In the meantime, speculations are rife that a new building that will house various film projects will be built on the site of the former “Le Wouri” cinema house.

As a reminder, the cinema house "Le Wouri" just like Abbia, belonged to the Fotso group.

Cameroon is one country where the cinema industry is fast losing its grounds as most cinema houses had long been abandoned and are fast turning into ruins, begging for resuscitation.

The government of this Central African country has often been chided by its citizens most especially those that are in the entertainment sector, of doing very little to promote not only the cinema business but the movie industry in general. By Landzeh Verla

South Region-Cameroon: Several Families Homeless as Heavy Rains Destroy Roofs of Houses

Several families are currently in desperate state of destitution after heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms damaged roofs of their houses beyond repairs.

The shocking mishap occurred in a village known as Mvam Yetom, located 20 Km off Ebolowa on the Ambam road in the South region of Cameroon.

According to sources, it rained torrentially that day and that besides the damage done to roofs of houses; other damage was caused by the strong rains.
