After UB Students’ Protest: Police Storm Kumbo in Search of Union Leader

Police in Bamenda have combed Kumbo in search of the Vice President of the commonwealth students’ union of the University of Buea (UB) Tangie Ryan-Fritz Forwang Mulutakwi.

He is said to be one of the student leaders that organized the strike action by students of the University of Buea on Monday November 21^st 2016.

According to sources, police resorted to the burning of the shop of Fritz’s father after failing to lay hands on the fugitive.

It should be recalled that on Monday 21^st November 2016, students of the University of Buea took to the streets protesting against decisions taken by authorities of the said higher institute of learning relating. The decisions were taken in response to another strike by teachers of the institution.

According to reports, the protest by the university students led to the arrest of over 100 students.  The Cameroon Report gathered that several other protesters were whisked off to a secret torture unit in SONARA, Limbe.

Sources revealed that the students’ erupted immediately after the Vice Chancellor of the university Professor Nalova Lyonga, issued a communiqué announcing that as from Monday November 21, 2016, CA tests were going to commence in various departments and schools of the University.

Prof. Nalova’s decision to get students take the impromptu CA tests wasn’t embraced by all and sundry especially given that lecturers of the said University together with other Anglophone teachers of the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon, were observing a sit-in protest then.

Students and parents alike, said they did not consider it safe returning to campus amidst the strike by their lecturers.

2017 Miss Cameroon Contest: Court Delivers Verdict

The Yaoundé court of First Instance has confirmed July 3, the election of Caroline Aimee Nseke as Miss Cameroon 2017.

Recall that a complaint was filed to the court earlier this year by Caroline Biloa Kounou, unfortunate candidate in the contest aimed at choosing the most beautiful girl in Cameroon. She asked the Court to suspend the term of Miss Caroline Aimee Nseke.

On that point, the Court of First Instance dismissed the evidence provided by the complainant as insufficient. It therefore condemns her at the expense of the trial.

Caroline Biloa Kounou, had initiated a lawsuit in emergency procedure to obtain the cancellation of the Miss Cameroon 2017 election held on December 30, 2017 in Yaoundé. She accuses the Miss Cameroon (Comica) Organizing Committee of having locked her behind the scenes to prevent her from being crowned after the number “20” which she held was called.

According to her, Caroline Aimee Nseke was crowned in her place.

Anglophone Appointed to Head ENAM Board

The head of state, Paul Biya has appointed an Anglophone to head the board of directors of the prestigious National School of Administration and Magistracy (ENAM).

The newly appointed Feh Helen Kwnagan, replaces Joseph Malegho Aseh, who has occupied the position for nearly two years.

The presidential decree appointing Ms. Feh Helen Kwangan was made public last Thursday.

On April 11, 2018, President Paul Biya signed a decree reorganizing ENAM. This limited the mandates of the Board of Directors and the General Management to a maximum of six and nine years respectively. At the same time, it established the responsibility of the Chief Executive Officer and his deputy before the Board of Directors, who can now sanction them “in the event of serious misconduct or behavior that could adversely affect the image or the proper functioning of ENAM”.

      The topsy-turvy resulting from the struggle by Anglophone separatists to restore the independence of the so-called state of Ambazonia, might have gripped Buea recently, but there are reports that, the situation in the chief town of the Southwest region on Monday July 9, 2018, was unprecedentedly scary.

According to locals, there was no sign of life  

TCR gathered that there was totally no business in the city as every shop remained permanently shut down in most parts of the Southwest region and in Buea, in particular.

Even the circulation of commercial as well as private motorbikes and taxis, was at near zero as every resident of the city feared for their lives and thus remained indoors.

Everyone was stunned that the ghost town in Buea was even the most intense ever, despite threats issued against advocates of ghost town operations by the Mayor of the Buea council, Ekema Patrick.

Reports said that the complete paralysis of the city of Buea was further instigated by clashes between defense and security forces and suspected separatist fighters in Mile 17 and Muea, as the latter blocked the entrance into the city of Buea.

TCR learnt from concordant sources that on Friday, Mayor Patrick Ekema, threatened to close all businesses that would remain closed during Monday’s ghost town. He even promised to go round the council buildings that are housing shops and businesses, just to ensure compliance with his instructions.

Reports said that at least two police officers were killed in Monday's violence in the cities of Buea and Kumba.

They are the Police Commissioner of Kumba City and a police inspector on duty in Buea.

At press time Tuesday, TCR had not had a balanced sheet of casualties from last Monday’s standoffs, but unofficial sources talked of a dozen deaths among the fighters and security and defence forces.

Residents said that over the preceding weekend end, calls for intensive ghost town in the cities of Buea, Limbe and Kumba were made by Anglophone separatists. There was heavy mobilization of the military to perhaps, squash attempts by anyone to enforce the call for ghost town in the said cities.

A fracas between the military and alleged separatist fighters therefore erupted in Buea for example, where the suspected fighters blocked the entrance into Mile 16. Vehicles were also burnt therein.

Douala: Vehicle Kills 20 Year Old Bike Rider

Amotorbike rider has been knocked dead by a car in Douala, principal city of Littoral region of Cameroon.

The 20 year old was hit in the early morning hours of Sunday July 8, 2018 at a neighbourhood known as PK 12, Douala III, reports have said.

According to local residents, Maxime, the 20-year-old motorbike rider, was driving towards PK 13, when he was hit hard by a car from the military engineering district.

Witnesses told TCR that the wounded man who was in critical condition, was immediately taken to the Military Engineering Hospital and then to the Santa Elena health center in PK 12; where he was denied admission.

“The doctors rejected his case and asked us to go elsewhere,” said a source.

Maxime, later died in a vehicle that was transporting him to the military garrison hospital in Bonanjo, situated just a few kilometers from the site of the mishap.

His lifeless body was then deposited in a morgue. An investigation into the accident has been opened by police officers from the 13th district public security station, who rushed to the scene of the accident.

Yaounde: Workers of Defunct State Corporations on Serious Strike

Reports from Yaoundé, Cameroon’s political capital say that a collection of aggrieved ex-workers of some defunct state corporations are currently striking therein.

According to our source, they now sit in front of the Ministry of Finance (MINFI) not far from the National Museum in Yaounde. From Monday to Friday, they are seen seated there, some with placards that carry messages of disgruntlement.

But, Le Jour newspaper of July 4, 2018, reported that fatigue is already beginning to overcome some of them.

We learnt that it has been two months since they demonstrated at this particular place in the nation’s capital in demand for the payment of the remainder of nine months of their social rights after the liquidation and the restructuring of state-owned companies in which they were employed.

“30 years is too much, free us. Where is the living together”, some of the placards read.

To ensure that their grievances are properly driven or conveyed to the appropriate quarters, the disgruntled former state workers have grouped themselves in a group of former employees of the liquidated or privatized state companies.

Beaucoup de ceux qui sont touchés sont des petits agriculteurs comme Makia, dans la région du sud-ouest du Cameroun.

La chenille légionnaire d'automne a endommagé environ 80 000 hectares de terres agricoles au Cameroun, réduisant les récoltes de céréales de base du pays de près des trois quarts dans certaines régions, a indiqué le gouvernement.

Douala: Découverte d'une tête humaine dans un magasin de New Bell

Selon les rapports, une vérification de routine des éléments du groupe territorial Wouri a conduit à la découverte d'un sac contenant une tête humaine dans un magasin dans une localité de Douala appelé New Bell.

Selon une source de Radio Balafon, le commerçant a déclaré aux agents de sécurité que ce paquet appartenait à son grand frère, qui est censé posséder le magasin où la découverte choquante a été faite.

En l'absence du frère aîné accusé, son cadet qui occupait le magasin au moment de la découverte, mardi 03 juillet 2018, a été conduit aux cellules du Groupe Territorial de Gendarmerie de Wouri pour interrogatoire.

2018 FIFA World Cup: CRTV Clears the Air amidst Accusations of Image Theft

During the opening ceremony of the ongoing 2018 Russia World Cup Cameroonians watching through Cameroon Radio and Televison Broadcasting Corporation CRTV, were stunned when the channel went blank all of a sudden, while other international channels were doing a full live coverage of the event.

It was later discovered that CRTV did not acquire the broadcasting license from KFS (Kwesé Free Sports), the accredited supplier with exclusive rights to broadcast the FIFA World Cup in Africa, and that CRTV was using the images fraudulently.
They were accused by KFS who reported them to FIFA, for stealing images.

It is in this light that Robert Ekukole, staff man and number one Technical Adviser of the National station came out Tuesday June 26, to explain to the public what actually happened.

Mr. Ekukole explained that procedures for obtaining broadcasting rights for this year's edition of the world cup competition were quite different from those of the previous years. 

“We acquired the broadcasting rights exclusively from an open source. On June 15, 2017 we signed a contract with the company that had exclusive broadcasting rights for Sub-Saharan Africa; Econet Media, a South African company based in the Mauritius Island. According to the contract, CRTV was to share this session with a maximum of two other operators in the Cameroonian territory. This contract was signed one year ago. We acquired the rights, and CRTV had since paid for it”. Mr. Ekukole said.

Anglophone Crisis: Minister Tchiroma Throws Punches Back at Amnesty International

Cameroon’s Minister of Communication cum government’s spokesperson, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, has reacted to the report published by the international rights group Amnesty International.

He reacted to the report during a press conference he organized in Yaoundé on Thursday June 14, 2018. During the press conference, Issa Tchiroma Bakary gave government’s harsh response to the “allegations” contained in the latest report of Amnesty International about the government of Cameroon vis-a-vis the current crisis in the two English speaking regions.

Since the outbreak of the socio-politico-security crisis in the English-speaking regions towards the end of 2016, Amnesty International, a human rights organization, has already published two reports in 2017 and 2018 on the state of human rights in the Northwest and Southwest regions that has been a flashpoint of conflicts between security and defence forces and Anglophone separatist fighters that have been struggling for the creation of a state of Ambazonia.

French language newspaper Mutations of June 8, 2018 has reported that the Court of First Instance of Bonanjo in Douala has responded favourably to the application for a probe into the disagreement over the inheritance of their father by erstwhile Minister of Arts and Culture, Ama Tutu Muna, kid sister to presidential aspirant, Akere Muna.

Anglophone Crisis: CDC Cries Out as Crisis Poses Threat to 5,000 Jobs

The Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) is in turmoil. No less than five thousand workers in this company could lose their jobs, if the crisis that shakes the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon persists, said the management of the company.

It was during a meeting held with staff representatives and trade unionists, where the state of the company was presented and proposals were made to warn of the negative effects of the current crisis.

“The year 2017 has not been good for society. 2018 began with bright spots in the Banana segment and an improvement in the palm oil segment,” said CDC General Manager Franklin Njie.

Cameroon: Muyuka Court of First Instance, Motorbikes Set Ablaze as Tensions Surge

A court in Muyuka has been ravaged by an inferno that engulfed it on Wednesday June 13, 2018.

TCR gathered that just as the cause of the fire remains unknown, the damage resulting from it has yet to be established as well.

Even though no one or group has claimed responsibility for this act which sources said was seemingly an arson attack, accusing fingers have been pointed at Anglophone separatist fighters.

Our source said that separatists are prime suspects because they have a history of arson attacks since the ongoing crisis in the two English speaking regions of Cameroon broke out in November 2016.

Elections Présidentielles 2018: Akere Muna insiste sur la possibilité d'une coalition contre le Président Biya

Le leader du "Now Movement", l'Avocat Akere Muna, a annoncé que des possibilités sont encore sur la table pour une éventuelle coalition des partis d'opposition avant les prochaines élections.

Akere, 65 ans, a officiellement annoncé sa candidature à l'élection présidentielle camerounaise cette année aux côtés de nombreux autres candidats de l'opposition, dont Joshua Osih du Front social-démocrate et Maurice Kamto du Mouvement de la Renaissance du Cameroun.
Cependant, il y a eu de plus en plus de soucis pour un front uni de l'opposition pour défier Paul Biya, 86 ans, qui est au pouvoir depuis 1982.

Akere Muna, qui était en tournée à Douala ce week-end, a déclaré lundi matin à Radio Balafon que toutes les options sont sur la table en vue d'un front de coalition de l'opposition.

"... Je pense qu'il y aura une coalition, Maurice et moi en avons discuté, Joshua (Osih) est quelqu'un que je connais, je connais sa famille, j'étais même son avocat dans plusieurs cas donc ce n'est pas vraiment un (gros) problème, Je pense que nous trouverons une solution, Cabral est quelqu'un que je ne connaissais pas beaucoup (à propos, nous échangeons de temps en temps des SMS.) J'exhorte les Camerounais à rester calmes car nous sommes conscients de l'urgence", a déclaré Akere Muna à Radio Balafon, basée à Douala, lundi matin.

CAMEROON: Minister Tchiroma Makes another Startling Revelation about Suspended MIDA

The Minister of Communication Issa Tchiroma Bakary, has returned to the amount of money that was collected from inhabitants of Yaoundé by MIDA.

According to him, leaders of the Integration and Development Mission for Africa (MIDA) did not collect 12 but 18 billion CFA francs from their Cameroonian subscribers.

He made the revelation Monday, June 11, 2018 in Yaoundé several weeks after government announced that the group had collected the sum of 12 billion FCFA from its subscribers.

The Minister of Communication granted a press conference to take stock of this affair, which sparked public outrage last April. The government spokesman noted that he was far off when he announced that this NGO, whose activities were suspended about two months ago, had collected 12,798,825,000 CFA francs from 11,835 subscribers.

Issa Tchiroma said Monday: “In total, under the 7th and 8th waves of subscription, there was a sum of 18,807,452,000 CFA francs collected and corresponding to 17,301 subscribers for 1,504,594 shares subscribed. 3. 850. 442. 275 CFA francs were seized, which fixes the deficit in relation to the sum collected at 14,956,982,000 CFA francs”.

In court on May 17, the lawyers of the MIDA officials, arrested in connection with this case, clearly disputed the discrepancies between the sums collected and those found, insinuating that money had been stolen from the office of MIDA by the police dispatched to the scene immediately after the order by the Senior Divisional Officer for Mfoundi, suspending the activities of MIDA.

The registration exercise initiated by the administrative authorities was completed last week. Repayment of invested funds is expected to follow suit even though no official date has been announced for the repayment process.

This has reportedly kept subscribers in an anxious state while waiting.

The Minister of Communication also revealed that five officials of MIDA are still being sought after.

US Ambassador Finally Returns to Cameroon amidst Alleged Diplomatic Rupture

His departure led to speculations on a possible diplomatic fracas between both countries but it was later revealed Ambassador Peter Henry Balerin, had taken his annual leave and would only return to Cameroon on June 8.

Sources reveal he finally returned to Yaounde during the weekend and was spotted at the Hilton Hotel in Saturday even though he has not made any public comment since his return.

It should be recalled Peter Henry Balerin, published a statement after meeting with Paul Biya on May 17, 2018 in which he told the Head of State to think of his legacy and how he will like to be remembered.

The American diplomat equally accused the Cameroonian army of carrying targeted killings in the two English-speaking regions of the country as well as accusing separatists of kidnappings.

This did not go down well with the Government of Cameroon who called the Ambassador to “order” through the Minister of External Relations.

A section of the media as well as political actors did not take the Ambassador’s statement kindly with Banda Kani of the Manidem party swearing live on TV against Peter Henry Balerin.

Anglophone Crisis: Amnesty International Releases Another shocking Report

A government crackdown in two regions of Cameroon where English-speaking separatists are campaigning for an independent state has inflamed the crisis, Amnesty International said on Tuesday.

In a 37-page report, the human-rights watchdog said it had catalogued “unlawful killings, destruction of private property, arbitrary arrests and torture” committed by the security forces since late 2017.

“Far from resolving the crisis, the clampdown on any form of dissent and the heavy-handed response by the Cameroonian authorities and security forces appear to have empowered and created space for more radical and violent movements to emerge, with a focus on secession and armed struggle,” it said.

“The human rights violations committed by the Cameroonian security forces and authorities have also contributed to creating a pervasive climate of fear, which some observers say has led to a growing sense of alienation among communities in the Anglophone regions.”

The unrest is unfolding in the Northwest and Southwest Regions — English-speaking regions once governed by colonial Britain that joined French-speaking Cameroon after it gained independence from France in 1960.

Marc Vivien Foe’s Son Finally Sentenced for Badly Battering Catholic Priest

The sentence was pronounced Wednesday by the court of Assises of Lyon.

Marc Foé was sentenced on Wednesday to five years in prison. The son of the late Cameroonian footballer Marc-Vivien Foé, is thus punished for a robbery perpetrated in a church.

On November 28, 2015, Marc Foé and Sofiane Bardot stormed a church in search of a safe.

But to their greatest dismay, they instead met Father Biquez, handcuffed him, beat him badly before fleeing.

Not long after the assault on the priest, Marc Foé returned to the scene of violence to recover his forgotten weapon. But unfortunately for him, he was instead arrested.

During the trial, the defense tried to convince the court that Marc Foé, has serious consequences of a racist attack he suffered in 2011.

His accomplice, Sofiane Bardot received the same penalty.

Human Rights in Cameroon: 175 Lawsuits against Law Enforcement Officers in 2016

The information is contained in a report produced by Cameroon for the UN Human Rights Council Working Group.

The Cameroonian government has taken action to combat the impunity of law enforcement personnel (gendarmes, police officers, magistrates, traditional authorities ..., Editor's note). This is reflected in its report on the human rights situation presented on May 16 before the UN body responsible for related issues. The document reveals that 175 lawsuits were filed against these public officials in 2016.
