A Black man has been shot dead by a sheriff’s deputy outside New Orleans on Tuesday night.
Jefferson Parish deputies were allegedly responding to reports of a robbery in Metairie, Louisiana, at around 11.45pm, WWL-TV reports.
Deputies allegedly spotted a man running toward a garage in a nearby building after responding to calls about suspicious activity on the Interstate 10 service road near a new car storage lot.
A deputy followed the man into the garage and told authorities the
man turned around and pointed a gun at him, Jefferson Parish Sheriff
Newell Normand’s office said on Wednesday.
The dead man, who has only been identified as a Black male, was armed with a 9 mm handgun, the sheriff’s office claim.
The deputy, David Dalton, fired six shots, one of which was fatal. Dalton’s race was not immediately known.
Witnesses reported that two men were ‘rolling something shiny’ down
the street and they were later seen running toward an Interstate 10
service road.
Deputies searching the vehicle lot allegedly discovered a new pickup truck on blocks with two wheels missing.
Sheriff Norman has called a news conference for Wednesday afternoon
to discuss the overnight shooting death of the man by a deputy.
It comes amid weeks of heightened tensions between law enforcement and the Black community.
Three weeks ago, the police murder of another Black man around 75
miles away in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, sparked a wave of anger and
protests against police treatment of Black people.
Alton Sterling, 37, was murdered outside a convenience store after
being assaulted by two white police officers on July 5. Video of his
murder sparked outrage.
His murder – and that of another Black man, Philando Castile, in Minnesota – sparked a series of protests across the country.
In Dallas, Texas, the protests turned deadly when a Black Army
veteran, Micah Johnson, allegedly opened fire during a Black Lives
Matter protest, killing five police officers.
The violence returned to Baton Rouge when a Black ex-Marine allegedly
ambushed police officers at a gas station on July 17, killing three
officers and wounding a further three.
