A French language daily newspaper Le Jour of March 28, 2018 has reported a disagreement between a company called, Gaz du Cameroun, and residents of the Ndogpassi district in Douala.
According to the paper, in order to make known their grievances, the residents organized a press conference that featured the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon and the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Justice and Peace commission.
Together, they denounced the “abuses” of the gas company on their lands in Ndogpassi 1, 2 and 3. “We want to put an end to the injustices we have suffered since the installation of Gaz du Cameroun here in Ndogpassi. That these injustices are taken into account by the structure which does not make efforts to maintain healthy and serene, relations with people of the neighborhood”, said one of the aggrieved, Chantal Ondoa, who also is president of the inhabitants of Ndogpassi 1, 2 and 3.
The locals blame the company for what they call “constant” pollution of their environment through the emission of toxic gases into the atmosphere as well as into the waters.
They also complain heavily about the heavy noises and explosions produced by machines of the company which they say sometimes cause panic among locals.
They regret the fact that in spite of all these, the company continues to maintain sealed lips and has not said anything to locals that bear the brunt of all the above mentioned ills.
Besides the populations, nearby churches also claim to be disturbed by activities of the company. “Recently, we have experienced violent shocks that have reached the church,” said Fr. Aloys Mbomnda whose parish is located about 100 meters from the reproached company's gas exploitation site.
