Anglophone Crisis: CDC Cries Out as Crisis Poses Threat to 5,000 Jobs

The Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) is in turmoil. No less than five thousand workers in this company could lose their jobs, if the crisis that shakes the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon persists, said the management of the company.
It was during a meeting held with staff representatives and trade unionists, where the state of the company was presented and proposals were made to warn of the negative effects of the current crisis.
“The year 2017 has not been good for society. 2018 began with bright spots in the Banana segment and an improvement in the palm oil segment,” said CDC General Manager Franklin Njie.

Despite this improvement, the situation could be worse in the near future if the crisis persists, especially in the South West region, where the CDC operates mainly. "Nine fields, namely Boa, Illoani Mill, Illoani, Mbonge, Mukonje, Malende, Mungo, Meanja, and Tombel are not operational. There is no guarantee of palm oil sales next year. Illoani has been producing nothing since April. Mondoni works partially, and worker safety is a major concern,” he added.
According to him, all these things seriously impact on the finances of CDC with imminent repercussions on employee income. He went further to say that staff salaries should be reduced by law if the crisis persists.
“From June 2018, workers in different fields in crisis should be paid 50% of their wages. If the situation persists, it will drop to 40% in July, 35% in August, 30% in September and after six months, these workers will be dismissed,” said the Director General.
A committee was subsequently formed by the staff representatives to formulate their grievances and to present them to the appropriate officials.
As a reminder, the CDC is the largest employer in Cameroon after the state, with nearly 22,000 employees. The company produces banana, palm oil, rubber, tea and some more marginal crops. Its plantations are located in Southwest Cameroon.
