According to a French language tri-weekly called L'oeil du Sahel of Wednesday, May 30, 2018, cholera has resurfaced in the North region of Cameroon. The paper reports that three cases of this disease were reported in two health areas of the Mayo-oulo district and that one of them had been confirmed about a week ago in Guirviza, a locality in the region.
As for the origin of these cases, “we are still striving to find them but it is thought that the cholera virus arrived by food from Nigeria that has been in an epidemic since March,” said Dr. Aliou, head of this health district.
Moreover, “all patients are out of danger. They were taken care of quickly. They are even ready to go out, but we still prefer to keep them under observation for a week,” reassured Dr. Aliou, adding that for two weeks, no other case has been declared.
To sustain the fight against this scourge, a strategy of response has already been put in place, the paper has reported.
“A team of rescuers has come down to the villages concerned to disinfect them and as we progress, we do treatment of wells. In addition to that, if the population is sensitized on behavioral hygiene, this will be the most important,” said the district chief.
People not only of the North region but Cameroonians in general have been called upon to adopt sanitary measures such as washing of hands with soap before and after meals and after using the toilet, to avoid contracting the virus.
