South West-Cameroon: Kidnapped Magistrate Finally Released


The former Vice-President of the Southwest Court of Appeal who was recently abducted has been released. According to sources, he was released by his captors in the morning of Wednesday April 11, 2018 in Afab in the Manyu division of the Southwest region. The circumstances of this release remain unknown. Retired Justice Mbeng Martin was kidnapped in Ekwelle by unidentified gunmen in the early hours of Sunday when he was attending his mother's funeral. It is difficult to give the circumstances of the release of this former magistrate. But, rumors within the family report the payment of ransom. On the other side, the spokesman of the Cameroonian army said Tuesday at Radio France International that research was underway for the release of Justice Mbeng Martin.

He was taken to hospital for medical examinations after his release. Arrests blamed on Anglophone separatists have been on the rise of recent. Most of those kidnapped have however been released but TCR cannot independently or authoritatively state if such releases were motivated by payments of ransoms. In the meantime, the Divisional Officer for Batibo, Namata Marcel Diteng and the regional delegate of social affairs for the Northwest region that were both kidnapped in February this year, are yet to regain their freedoms and their whereabouts remain unknown until now.
