Reports from Ngousso in Yaoundé said that on Tuesday March 20 2018, activities grinded to a halt at the gendarmerie brigade therein as taxi drivers under the banner of their various unions, gathered to protest the killing of one of theirs.
The drivers were seeking justice for a colleague killed in the very early hours of Tuesday March 19, 2018.
According to sources, the deceased whose name we got as Jean Nga Mvondo, died in his home at about 4am, after receiving serious beatings from elements of the Ngousso gendarmerie.
TCR gathered that that fateful day, his car broke down in front of the gendarmerie station at about 10:30 and that when he was ordered to remove his vehicle, he rather started explaining what had happened to his car. The gendarmes rather pulled him out of his car and started beating.
The unfortunate man was later dragged inside the building where he was placed in a cell. It was not until late in the night, after the owner of the taxi went to the station to get his taxi that the moribund man was released. He later died in his home.
Tuesday’s riot was contained only thanks to the intervention of a Divisional Officer that descended to the scene and ordered for an administrative custody of the gendarmes implicated. The gendarmerie station was closed for the remainder of the day.
According to local residents, all the staff had been taken to the State Secretariat for Defense (SED) for interrogation.
TCR learnt Maurice Kampto after getting information about the riot, petitioned the secretary of state for defense about the incident. The newly appointed secretary immediately swung into action by dismissing the commander of the brigade. He was equally arrested and detained to be charged for murder. Meanwhile, the new secretary of state for defense has also warned other gendarmerie elements against excesses.
