Cameroon’s former minister of Water and Energy, Basil Atangana Kouna who had been on the run for several days, has been arrested in neighbouring Nigeria by international police (Interpol).
The ex-minister was arrested and repatriated to Cameroon in the evening hours of Thursday March 22, 2018. Rumours had earlier circulated that former minister Basil Atangana Kouna had been spotted in Canada.
News that he had been arrested in Nigeria has debunked allegations that he had been arrested in a border town in the South region of Cameroon trying to cross into Equatorial Guinea.
The wife of Basil Atangana had been arrested and grilled at the judicial police in Yaoundé after her husband’s disappearance. She however maintained not knowing her husband’s whereabouts.
Basil Atangana Kouna is one of the state officials that were shortlisted for grilling following accusations of embezzlement leveled against him.
He is accused of having embezzled state funds while he served as minister of Water and Energy and had been restrained from travelling out of the country.
He is currently being held at the national gendarmerie headquarters (SED) in Yaoundé.
