According to sources in Kumbo, chief town of Bui division in the Northwest region where Nso is found, the people had buried the queen mother early in the morning of Saturday March 3, 2018, before the Fon of Nso HRM Sehm Mbinglo III received support from paramilitary staff to exhume the corpse.
The unprecedented saga occurred on Saturday March 3, 2018, and shocked not only the Nso community which is noted for its stiff adherence to traditional norms and values, but the entire world.
We gathered that shortly after the burial of the queen mother, security operatives stormed the quarter where the interment had taken place and exhumed the corpse that was then conveyed to a common burial ground for queen mothers that was created by the Fon some four years ago.
Our sources in Kumbo told us that the deceased was aged about 120 years and that before her death, lived with a prince called Shey Frederick Alahni, who was her son.
Following the death of the queen mother after an illness, the prince then removed the corpse from the mortuary and decided to bury her in his home since she lived with him before her death.
The death celebration of the old queen mother was underway when three trucks of security operatives stormed the compound and exhumed the corpse of the queen mother.
According to the Secretary General of Nso Development Association (NSODA) Bulami Edward, queen mothers were buried at a place called “Tah Ntoh”, before the creation of the burial ground for them. And that a son could beg for authorization from the Fon to bury the queen in their compound.
TCR gathered that the polemic thus arose because the prince did not get the authorization from the Fon to bury the queen other and that had that been the case, the Fon would have sent a mat, and a “Tah Ntoh” to talk to the grave as tradition demands.
