There is untold tension and panic in Mbanga in the Littoral region following an armed attack that was carried out therein and which has been attributed to armed Anglophone separatist fighters.
According to sources, the attack was recorded at about 7am on Wednesday June 13, 2018 in Kotto, a village not far from Penda Mboko, and bordering Muyuka, a town in the South West region that is plagued by a socio-political crisis.
“My colleague was on a motorcycle to a center for the written phase of the First School leaving Certificate Exams to ensure safety of candidates. He received gunshots from unknown persons along the way,” said another security force.
Members of the Cameroonian army rushed to the scene of the mishap and fired shots several times with the hope of getting hold of the assailants but did not succeed as they had fled.
It was however possible for the army to recover weapons, said a source at the National Gendarmerie in an exclusive interview granted French language online publication, Cameroon Info Net.
The same source indicates that the defense and security forces are monitoring the situation on the ground.
Sources say that this was the first time that Mbanga district was attacked by suspected separatists. According to locals in Muyuka, there was exchange of heavy gunshots between security and defence forces and separatist fighters in Muyuka in the early hours of Wednesday, June 13, 2018.
Even though we did not get any information on fallouts of the shootout, there were indications that it lasted long.
The injured Njamen, Marechal des Logis, was rushed to the military hospital in Douala for treatment.
