Less than two weeks after the infamous train accident in Eseka in the Centre Region that claimed at least 75 lives on October 21, 2016, another deadly accident struck the region yesterday, November 2, 2016. According to Senior Warrant Officer (“Adjudant Chef”) Sandi Salomon, Head of the Bafia Gendarmerie Highway Patrol Unit, who talked to colleagues at the scene, the accident happened at about midday between Carrefour Emana and Nkoak-Idjen village in Lékié Division.
The driver of the grey Toyota Hilux pick-up van travelling from Bafoussam in the West Region to Yaounde was over-speeding when he lost control at a bend. As a result, nine out of 10 women who were returning from early morning prayers were crushed to death on the spot, Sandi said. The only survivor who was rushed to the Ad Lucem Hospital at Efok was said to be in critical state, the gendarmerie officer told Cameroon Tribune on phone yesterday.
“The Christian women didn’t notice the vehicle arrive as it came from behind them after crossing the road to their own side. There was no way for them to escape as the accident happened within the twinkle of an eye,” Senior Warrant Officer Sandi explained. Meanwhile, the driver of the empty van, who did not suffer any injury, is helping gendarmes with investigations led by the Commander of the Gendarmerie Company for Lékié, Major Assoumou Menye Oscar.
Major Assoumou Menye also told Cameroon Tribune on phone that the accident occurred instead at 8.15 am as the 10 women were returning from morning prayers at Emana Catholic Church. “They were on their way to pray for a sick member when they met their death,” he explained. Meanwhile, the 9 corpses were taken to the mortuary of the Yaounde Central Hospital by the Divisional Officer and Mayor of Ebebda, given that the local morgue was full, Major Assoumou Menye Oscar.
