Fire Destroys Goods worth 80 Million FCFA after Gutting Shop at Marche Congo

An inferno that occurred on February 16, 2018 has caused untold damage to a shop at a popular market called Marche Congo in Cameroon’s economic metropolis, Douala.
According to our correspondent in the main city of the Littoral region, business operators in the market have blamed the cause of the wild fire on repeated and severe low voltage that affected the market that day.
The shop that contained mainly electronics and situated on a three floored storey building in the market, caught the fire at about 5pm that day.
According to the owner of the shop, goods estimated at about 80 Million FCFA were consumed by the conflagration. The shop contained goods such as TV sets, refrigerators, mobile phones and computers.

We gathered that the damage would have been worse if not for the timely intervention of fire fighters that stormed the scene of the mishap and tried to contain the flames, and also prevented them from extending to neighbouring shops.
Business operators in the market told our correspondent that the inconsistency of electricity in the market in recent times is to blame for the disaster. They added that the situation had been so in the market for three days before the disaster happened.
Marche Congo, just like many other big markets in Douala, has severally been victim of fire accidents that have often caused enormous material losses.
