On Sunday March 25, 2018, senatorial elections were held throughout Cameroon. A total of 10,000 voters were expected by Elections Cameroon (ELECAM), the organ in charge of organizing elections in Cameroon.
Not even the heavy rains that hit the city of Yaoundé that morning slowed the momentum of the voters, who were forced to make their choice through the ballot box in the lone polling station of the city which was found in Bastos.
TCR gathered that once voting was over, the voters were however seen in front of ballot boxes but this time, to collect money.
According to the French language newspaper La Nouvelle Expression of Wednesday, March 28, 2018, each voter received 50,000 FCFA to pay their “taxi” fare as explained by officials of ELECAM and the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Regional Development (MINEPAT), who distributed this money.
TCR learnt from the same sources that at the end of the voting exercise, the government had spent a total of 500 million FCFA for the 10,000 municipal councilors that participated in the elections.
In addition, it should be noted that no major incidents were recorded during these elections, except for the attack by suspected secessionists at the Bangem poling station in the Southwest region.
At present, the focus is on the Constitutional Council especially as concerns the petition by the SDF party, calling for the cancellation of results of the elections in the Southwest region as the party cites terrorist attacks and early closure of the polls therein, as some of the irregularities.
There is also anxiety especially among the candidates as the proclamation of results of the elections by the Constitutional Council is awaited. FHM
