The former captain of the indomitable Lions of Cameroon, Samuel Eto’o, has strongly castigated two international media organs, for announcing on April 1, 2018 that he was going to be candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in Cameroon.
According to reports, France 24 and Jeune Afrique made the pronouncement as their own April fool prank to their listeners.
The celebrated football hero thus demands that his right of reply be published by the two media organs concerned, under penalty of legal proceedings for “defamation”.
Even though social media users seemed to have been excited about this pronouncement by the two French media organs, Samuel Eto’o seems to have been strongly irritated by this hoax.
“This hoax is harmful,” he said.
He proceeded to say that, “as a Cameroonian, I am deeply respectful of the institutions of my country and those who embody them. I therefore believe that the 2018 presidential election in Cameroon and the exercise of the supreme office are very important for us to talk about so lightly. More seriously, the authors of this farce mock the Anglophone crisis. A situation that causes daily desolation and mourning in my country,” he wrote.
According to him, the pronouncement by the media organs concerned were reductive to his modest person and that they denote a lack of respect given that both media organs claim that the player would have declared his presidential ambitions in 2017 since he has often dreamt to play politics.
The two organs quoted Samuel Eto’o as having used derogatory statements against Anglophones within the context of the current Anglophone crisis.
"I spent a year in London when I was in Chelsea. I know very well the way of thinking of Anglophones. They are sometimes rough and nervous, but I know how to adapt to all types of mentality - my career proves it. Wherever I stand on, I have great adaptability. When we play with John Terry, it's not some separatist militias that can scare you,” France 24 and Jeune Afrique quoted Samuel Eto’o as having said.
It is also reported that, the two renowned media organs reported that Eto’o suggested that his wife Georgette was going to become a first lady just like Chantal Biya. “They have a common passion for hairdressing since Georgette was a manager of a saloon when we met.
All these pronouncements have caused the football legend to run amok, and he has greatly chided the two French media organs. He does not think that these are some of the issues that the two media organs can use to joke with.
