Twenty-four hours after the senatorial elections of March 25 and the announcement of the provisional participation rate, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM), the organ in charge of the organization and the supervision of the political polls has reviewed its copy, and has delivered the final figures of the participation in the said election.
Abdoulaye Babale has in a press briefing organized on Monday March 26, 2018 indicated to this effect that “after verifications of all the counting situations at the end of the vote, (...) the figures now show 10,122 municipal councilors, members of the electoral college for 9,909 voters; a participation rate of 97.72% ". These figures indicate that the rate of abstention stands at 2.28%, with 203 councilors abstaining.
ELECAM states that this variation in figures is due to the relatively short time that has elapsed between the closing of the polls and the announcement of provisional figures. “There was a delay in the compilation of data, and there were also communication problems. Some data was transmitted for the sake of speed by voice, and there was confusion. The numbers we have now come from all the corrections that were done in the polling stations, and in the regional oversight commissions,” said the Chief Electoral Officer.
The figures published by ELECAM show that the South West region has had the highest rate of abstention, with 153 councilors absent or 17.77%. An abstention due to the unrest recorded in this region during the electoral process, including on Election Day.
For example, the polling station in the city of Bangem was attacked on Sunday, and the residence of the Divisional Officer therein also raided by secessionists.
The minister of territorial administration, Paul Atanga Nji affirmed after the elections that, “the senatorial election took place under satisfactory conditions” and that, voters went in large numbers to the polls and fulfilled their civic duty “in all security”.
The counting and general vote counting process will continue at the regional level first and then at the national level, before the final proclamation of the results by the Constitutional Council within a maximum period of 15 days.
