Some two families have been rendered completely destitute in a neighbourhood called Makepe-Missoke in Douala, Cameroon’s economic metropolis after a wild inferno gutted and razed their homes.
According to sources at the scene of the disaster, the two homes were completely reduced to ashes and nothing was recovered. Only charred remains of house utensils were visible on the site as owners wept over their immense losses.
TCR gathered that the fire was caused by a candle that was lit by a child of one of the homes. After lighting the candle, the boy then fell asleep minutes after and forgot to quench it. It then ravaged some equipment in the house before finally engulfing the entire building and extending to an adjacent house.
The fire that escalated at about 11pm Wednesday May 30, 2018, caused everyone in the neighbourhood to prematurely get out of bed. Despite frantic efforts by neighbours to douse the flames, they only intensified and ravaged two buildings completely.
The owner of the house where the fire originated said he had warned his son against lighting candles but he failed to heed to his warning.
A devastated woman wept, “I was unable to recover anything from my burnt house. All I have left is my underwear that I am wearing now.”
Reports say that devastating fire accidents have been on the rise in the economic capital of Cameroon, Douala, of late and that this has made several persons in the city to wonder aloud about the role of the firefighters’ brigade.
