The incident occurred on Monday, June 25 at a locality called “Fiango market”.
Reports from Kumba, chief town of Meme division in the Southwest region of Cameroon say that at least one person has been killed by a pickup belonging to the National Gendarmerie in Kumba. According to information gathered from eyewitnesses on the spot, the said truck hit a motorcycle driver on his motorbike on its way to a base to transport elements solicited somewhere for reinforcement.
Our correspondent in Kumba said that the incident happened not far from one of the biggest markets of the city, the “Fiango market”.
We also gathered that a few hours earlier, unidentified gunmen invaded a commercial area and chased traders as well as seized motorbikes from riders on grounds that it was ghost town.
Notified on the issue, elements of the gendarmerie stormed the site to restore order. This led to clashes between security forces and the attackers. Faced with the resistance of these individuals, a pickup of the security forces rushed to seek reinforcements. On its way, the vehicle struck a man on a motorbike and his passenger, before making a halt on a wall.
The bike rider died on the spot while his grievously injured passenger was conveyed to a nearby health facility for medical care.
An irate population was about setting the pickup vehicle of the gendarmerie ablaze before the prompt intervention of other elements to hamper them.
