CAMEROON: Police Boss Announces New Security Measures for Crisis Hit Anglophone Regions

The Delegate General for National Security (DGSN, police) of Cameroon, Martin Mbarga Nguele, has asked all the regional delegates and “on very high instructions of the head of the State”, to take appropriate measures to reinforce, without unnecessary hassle, the control of administrative and military vehicles on the highways.
Based on the “current security context”, and “in order to avoid the opportunistic penetration of dangerous people and equipment into Cameroon”, he also prescribed the systematic verification of the records of said cars and the identification of their occupants. According to sources familiar with the matter, interviewed by APA and speaking on condition of anonymity, the police boss intends to stop the phenomenon, which is gaining momentum and particularly in the English-speaking regions of North West and the Southwest, secessionist assaults against checkpoints and command posts.

According to the same source, the main aim of separatist attacks on police checkpoints has been to get weapons, ammunition and other logistical means belonging to the defense and security forces.
In line with the prescriptions of the DGSN, the governor of the South-West region, Bernard Okalia Bilai, has called on Senior Divisional Officers, commander of the gendarmerie legion and other heads of police units to reinstate mixed control points on strategic roads, including at the entry and exit points of urban centers.
Checks will be accompanied by systematic searches of vehicles and passengers on board. This redeployment, says the governor, is a response to “the attacks and kidnappings perpetrated by separatists,” recently recorded in the heart of some urban centers and administrative units. According to sources, this new security reinforcement in the Anglophone regions coincides with a new wave of tensions following a slogan launched by a secessionist group called “Victoria Shark Battalion”, which has called on the populations to respect all the texts and regulations of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia, which they want to create.
In this call that has widely circulated on social media, the said activists have also called on Francophones living in the English speaking regions for business or professional reasons, to evacuate between June 1 and June 3, 2018.
Recall that there have been condemnations of hate speeches no matter where they came from, by the US Ambassador to Cameroon, Peter Henry Barlerin. He made the condemnation after the Communication Secretary of separatists Chris Anu, called on francophones living in the English speaking regions of Cameroon to leave “for their own interest.”
